IGES signed a Cooperation Agreement with Fukuoka City to carry out a pilot project of the Fukuoka Method landfill (semi-aerobic landfill to stabilise waste materials) in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
In Lao PDR, a large proportion of municipal waste is currently disposed of in open dumps or poorly managed landfills, which are significant sources of methane emissions.
Under this partnership, IGES will lead the overall project, while Fukuoka City will provide technical expertise, advisory support and training, based on its long-standing experience with the Fukuoka Method.
The pilot project is expected to improve waste management practices and reduce methane emissions in Lao PDR in a cost-effective manner. The collaboration involves identifying a pilot site by upgrading a small section of an existing landfill, as well as sharing knowledge and skills through training local engineers and operators in the Fukuoka Method. It also includes the development of practical, easy-to-follow guidelines to support ongoing day-to-day operations.
Through this initiative, IGES will continue to work with partners to advance sustainable waste management and circular economy practices in Asia and beyond.
